Workers' Compensation
Unless your business is located in Texas, where maintaining Workers' Compensation insurance is optional, most states require you to purchase Workers' Comp coverage in the event you or a worker experiences a workplace injury. In general, an employee with a work-related illness or injury can get Workers' Comp benefits regardless of who was at fault-the employee, the employer, a co-worker, a customer, or some other third party, with some exceptions.
It can help cover expenses for medical treatment, lost wages, and other costs, including:
Medical Coverage
Medical coverage pays the cost of treating workers for an occupational illness or injury for doctor visits, hospital treatment, nursing care, medications, medical tests, physical therapy, and medical equipment.
Disability
Disability benefits are intended to replace a portion of the wages an employee loses while he or she is disabled due to a work-related injury. Each disability is classified into one of four categories: 1) Temporary Total, 2) Temporary Partial, 3) Permanent Total, 4) Permanent Partial. The amount workers receive for disabilities varies widely from state to state.
Rehabilitation
Most states provide vocational rehabilitation to workers who are unable to return to their previous job due to an on-the-job injury and may provide psychological rehabilitation if a worker has suffered a work-related mental injury.
Death
If an employee dies due to a work-related injury, death benefits are paid to the worker's spouse, minor children, and other dependents. Burial costs are also covered.
Note: A treatment covered in one state may not be covered in another. The amount of benefits provided and the manner in which they are delivered varies from state to state.
